Second phase of the Setanta Sports Cup launched
Wednesday, 17th February, 2010
THE second phase of the 2009/10 Setanta Sports Cup was officially launched today (February 17th, 2010), as the countdown to the tournament's final gathers pace.

Clubs gathered at Belfast City Hall to officially mark the re-launch of the tournament following the winter break. The tournament will recommence on Friday, February 26th, when St. Patrick's Athletic host Linfield in a match to be broadcast live on Setanta Ireland.

The tournament, which is now in its fifth season, will enter its knock-out phase in March and April before culminating in the final, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 15th.

Speaking at the launch of the second phase of the 2009/10 Setanta Sports Cup, Milo Corcoran, Chairman of the tournament Organising Committee, spoke of the importance of the tournament.

"The first half of this season's tournament saw some very exciting matches, especially for our two new entrants, Bohemians and Sligo Rovers. Now in its fifth season, the Setanta Sports Cup is an important feature of the football calendar on both sides of the border.

"Aside from the obvious football benefits of the Setanta Sports Cup, the tournament has also played an important role in bringing together the football communities on both sides of the border. Supporters and club officials have enjoyed meeting their counterparts, and both the FAI and IFA have found the tournament tremendously beneficial.

"The opportunity to work closely together has been welcomed by both Associations. Close cooperation can only benefit football on this island."

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Danny Lavery, attended today's launch and passed on the good wishes of the city to all involved in the tournament.

"Organising a tournament such as this is a mammoth task, so congratulations to everyone who has played their part in bringing all of this together," he said.

"I am also delighted to pass on best wishes - and good luck - to all those taking part in what is sure to be one of the highlights of our sporting calendar".
